The First Amendment gives us the freedom to petition the government. In New Hampshire, everyday citizens who understand how our state government works have the power to affect real change. In this class Anna Brown and Mike Dunbar of Citizens Count will show you how to follow activity in the state legislature, identify opportunities for advocacy, and make the best case for your cause. This class includes step-by-step guides as well as inspiring stories about the power of a single voice in New Hampshire’s democracy.
In the class you will learn how to:
The best ways to research legislation and the hearing process.
How to identify elected officials to contact for advocacy, and tips for outreach.
Tips for crafting persuasive arguments on the policy issues most important to you.
Your Instructors:
Anna Brown is one of New Hampshire’s foremost experts on state government and policy. After completing her master’s degree in justice studies she began her career with Citizens Count, a nonprofit dedicated to providing unbiased information about New Hampshire democracy – including the roughly 2,000 bills and 1,000 candidates that move through the state every two years. She is a founding member of the New Hampshire Civic Learning Coalition, a member of the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits Policy Committee, and a frequent commentator in local media. In 2024 she joined the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law as Executive Director of the Rudman Center for Justice, Leadership, and Public Service.
Mike Dunbar is the Director of Content at Citizens Count. He is responsible for developing the organization’s content strategy, implementing the brand style guide he helped develop, writing articles about New Hampshire policy, and editing all written material produced by the organization. He co-hosts Citizens Count’s podcast $100 Plus Mileage, writes and manages the monthly newsletter and Weekly Legislative Preview newsletter, and oversees social media presence.
